Rangers win Chinook Cup!
printed in the Tigard Times 8-31-06The U11 Southside Soccer Club Rangers went 5-0 at the Chinook Cup soccer tournament and took first place in the Gold Division.
An annual tournament hosted by Southside, this year’s August 24-27 Chinook Cup fielded over 250 teams from throughout the Northwest.
The Rangers, composed of 10-year-olds from Tigard, Tualatin, Sherwood, Newberg and southwest Portland, went 3-0 in pool play, putting them in the semi-finals against the Eastside Pumas. A 4-0 win over the Pumas set the stage for the championship game against the Columbia Timbers 95 Red, a strong team out of southwest Washington, who the Rangers had beat in pool play 2-1.
In the championship game, the Timbers scored the first goal of the game and went ahead 1-0 at halftime. But the Rangers battled back. With six minutes left in the game, midfielder Matt Kimball scored on a loose ball after a corner kick to tie the game up 1-1. With the game on the line, striker Sean McManamon scored with a bend-it-like-Beckham corner kick with two minutes left in the game to clinch the championship.
The Rangers saw a strong offense and stingy defense throughout the tournament. The defense was anchored by the play of Jake Gellos, Graham Fletcher and Charles Petitjean in the middle defender positions, and by Grayson Oviatt and Shane Rasor at the outside defender positions. Keegan McCormick and Ryan Hyatt played strong in the goalkeeper position. Midfielders Tyler Street, Ben White, Connor Carraher, Matt Kimball and Nico Maier provided offensive punch, as did strikers Sean McManamon, Bryan Berg and Taylor Douglas.
The Rangers are 18-0 since mid-July, when they also took first place in the Gresham Cascade Cup.
The Rangers begin their fall season on September 9, where they will be playing in the Premier Gold Division of the Oregon Youth Soccer Association.
The squad is coached by Gaff Leyland, with Kevin McManamon as assistant coach.

Who had a lot of pants
She fell for a prank
And married Hank
Then they had a great dance

Grace from Space

There once was a girl named Grace.
Who always had parties on space
She thought she was wealthy, and
really not healthy, and realized
it was her waist!
